Rising 4th Grade Should be able to ...
- Confidently identify basic parts of speech: nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and verbs
- Use basic math facts accurately and quickly (about 3 seconds per fact: addition, subtraction, multiplication, & division)
- Confidently use proper subject / verb agreement
- Use regrouping strategies in math, especially subtracting across zeros of two and three digit numbers
- Have experience reading non-fiction texts, especially understanding how to use the different parts of a nonfiction text
- Handwriting is understandable, letters formed well (practice writing quickly)
- Develop stamina to complete and understand fiction novels (chapter books – on appropriate level)
- Demonstrate dictionary and thesaurus skills
- Understand and correctly read maps including map key, compass rose (cardinal directions), scale, major boundaries
- Recognize basic geographic features
- Students begin their study of US history with the development of Native American cultures and ends just prior to the Civil War. Students would benefit from an understanding of colonial way of life and how our government works.
